A new day follows the new moon we saw on Monday night.
View from the window as the sun rises over the ocean at Balandra on 30 May, 2006. The video is sped up ... and we sound like excited chipmunks in the background.

Simple fullness

I'll use this photo again because it is relevant to what I am about to say.

Over the past few days I gradually slipped into a low energy state, questioning myself, my point, my path, my purpose ... etc etc bla bla bla dee da. Life. In all, I was feeling lost, confused, indecisive, miserable and purposeless. I think it started happening here ... But then again, as I've come to learn, this kind of mood predates an important shift (inner and/or outer) and new realisations ... as the Self struggles to make sense of and embrace the unknown (what is being given) whilst letting of the known (what is being released). It involves patience.

Anyway, in the midst of my malaise, the KC image featured above kept popping into my head. Because of the positioning of the mints, it looked to me as though the message was saying: "I love you. Be thankful."

It struck me as a message from God/The Universe ... and, whilst I understood what it was saying, my low energy mood did not enable me to fully absorb it. So, even though it kept flashing in my mind's eye, I kept ignoring it.

But when I woke up this morning and the image popped into my head again, my mood shifted in order for me to see the simple fullness:

I love you. Be thankful. You are as you are because that is who you are meant to be. You are where you are because that is where you are meant to be. You do what you do because that is what you are to do in the way that only you can do it.
*
And that goes for you too.

A message of trust from the KC Oracle.

Giet of Friedship

Thanks, Attilah for reminding me of "Giet of friedship" ... one of the most notorious KC wrappers of all time. How could I have forgotten it? For those who don't understand the phrase due to the misspelling, 'Giet of friedship' is actually Gift of friendship.
Anyway, I hate to be the bearer of disappointing news ... but SK has not yet returned my call. Perhaps, as we have a long weekend ahead of us (Indian Arrival Day), many are preparing for festivities or have gone somewhere for the few days.
In the mean time, let's cool things down with a KC mint recollection that my fried ... I mean friend Glen shared with me about two days ago. (Transcribed from dictaphone).
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Glen holds up a mint he chose from my KC bag that day. The spelling of 'crazy' on this message has been amended. I seem to remember it at one point saying 'Carzy in Love'.
*
Glen: My first experience with KC mints was because of the line that they gave about love and so on ... And as a young teenager you know you tend to get crushes and stuff like that in school. Of course Glen couldn't talk fluently to any girl, so the KC was the medium that I used to convey a message. (Laughter). I would give this mint to this girl in particular ...
Elspeth: So you mean she would see you giving the mints?
Glen: No. Initially she didn't know where it was coming from, because I would get friends to give it to her.
Elspeth: Okay ... so every day you would give her mints?
Glen: No, not every day ... but you know, that was the first connection that was made ... with KC mints. I can't remember the exact line that was used, but I chose one ... you know, the best line. I really can't remember it, but I used that and I gave a friend to give it to her.
Elspeth: Don't tell me she ended up with the friend!
Glen: No, no ... there's a secret admirer involved here. You know? So that was the first method. But mints ... mints ... I would agree have always been a part of life in Trinidad. You know everbody has a mint. You go to a doctor's office, you know, there's a little bowl. Even my plumber on Watt's Street ... he has a bowl for his customers.
Elspeth: I like that. (Putting forth the bag of mints). Now pick one from this bag and see what you get.
Glen (pulling one out of the bag): I love you. Crazy in love. (Laughter)
Elspeth: If you pick one now ... does it mean anything now? Would you give it to somebody now?
Glen: Yeah, sure. Now I'm a lot braver, so I may not need this as a ...
Elspeth: ... a bridge.
Glen: Yeah (Laughing) But then it was the only thing I coulda think about! (Pause). I didn't get the girl though. And the guy I sent it with didn't get her either.
(Laughter from both)

Refreshing great way!

Hmmm ... (as with most mysteries, I suppose), the answer is not always immediate. I have not yet been able to tap into the truth about the messages on KC dinner mint wrappers. S.K. from KC did not call me back yesterday (as anticipated) and, when I called (thinking that she may have forgotten), the same woman who had answered before told me "I said she will call you." So I will leave it at that and wait on S.K. to return my call ... or, to phrase it in the words on one of the wrappers: "Waiting for you."
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
In the meantime, armed with my small bag of mints, I will carry out investigations behind the scenes (results to be featured in upcoming posts). The above photo indicates what is announced on the front of the KC dinner mints pack ... whilst the back of the pack states (as though talking about one mint): KC DINNER MINT (as opposed to 'mints') HAS BEEN KNOWN INTERNATIONALLY FOR ITS GREAT MINT TASTE. LOVE NOTES ON THE WRAPPERS TO MAKE LIFE SWEETER.

Thus far people have been recounting memories of KC in their lives: from travelling wrappers ... to Valentine's Day wrappers ... to this-is-what-could-be-going-on-between-us-but-we're-not-brave-enough-to-voice-it-or-act-upon-it wrappers ... to innocent love wrappers ... to I-have-a-boner wrappers ... to prophetic wrappers ... and more.

Check them out and stay tuned. Whether S.K. calls back or not, I will make sure to find out who's behind those endearing little messages.

The mystery of the minty mesages

Yesterday I called the KC factory to find out more about the messages on the mints. I was transferred to S.K. who was unable to take my call at the time, but the woman who spoke to me and took my contact information, told me that S.K. would call me tomorrow. Before parting, she said to me: "May I ask what this is about?" I explained my interest in the messages on the mints and that mostly everyone in Trinidad has had some kinship with the wrappers in their lifetime. I further explained that apart from hearing about regular people's own experiences with (or memories of) the wrappers, I wanted to hear from KC themselves what the story was behind these messages - who wrote them and why. The woman said "Ohhhhhh, yes, I see!" in a tone which indicated that she understood my mission.

I'll see what happens when I speak with SK. But in the meantime ...

1. Check here to see if other people will write personal stories on/memories of the mint wrappers

2. In addition to the message featured in today's photo, other minty messages in the bag of mints I bought yesterday are:

Enchanted moment (repeated the most in the pack)

Sharing our lives

Real love

Love me tender

Crazy in love

I'm gonna love you

Never forget you

Treasured love

Stay sweet and kind

Call it love

Waiting for you

Memories of you

Emotionally yours

I love you

There is no wrong spelling, bad grammar or corny message on this Perreira's Candy dinner mint wrapper ... therefore, to me, it lacks the charm of good old KC Dinner Mints with their often grammatically challenged love messages. I've seen quite a few amusing ones over the years, but only these few come to mind now:
1. A women in love
2. True love never die
3. Please be mines (or something along those lines)

These messages with their wrong spelling and dubious grammar were a source of great mirth whenever we came across them. I always used to wonder who wrote the messages. Somehow I envisioned an older man or woman sitting in a dark dusty room, hunched over a desk scribbling little one- line love notes all day ... then taking them to a supervisor who would select a few out of the many and use those on the mint wrappers. The wrappers all bear two messages - a constant and a variable. The constant is "I love you". The variable is something like "You're special" or "A women in love." Maybe that older man/woman was writing to someone he/she loved but could not connect with for some reason and that was their only way of expressing their feelings. Perhaps they were poets at heart, longing for the chance to be published. Maybe they were like an advertising copywriter, hired to 'be creative' and come up with 'love slogans'. But would a vacancy notice for such a job be put in the papers? It would be interesting to find out the story behind those messages and the person/people who wrote them. Hmmm ... maybe I'll go and investigate and report back to headquarters.

It seemed that over the years everything else was changing, but the KC Dinner mint wrapper messages remained stuck in a time warp. They did change eventually, which was refreshing, but nothing has happened again for a while. I find it fascinating. There must be a whole world of people out there who do more with these wrappers than simply read them (or not) and toss them away. People give them to their beloveds. Secret admirers must leave them on their crush's desk at work. Taxi drivers probably slip one subtly along with the change to some female passenger. Well, maybe in the 'old days'. Now they wouldn't be so subtle. I'm sure at some point those of us who live (or lived) here might have received or given one. Whether given in seriousness or in jest, whether corny or grammatically awry, I find they're special. I still have one in my car which a friend stuck in the space between my rearview mirror and the ceiling after we had worked on a project together last year. It says: "I love you. You're an inspiration."

A highly symbolic HIV/AIDs memorial night

This photo shows tyre marks made by the large trucks that were moving equipment from the stage at the end of the show. I noticed the tyre marks when the event was over and I was leaving the field to go home. The marks form the shape of the symbolic red HIV/AIDs ribbon.

Yesterday evening I was at the HIV/AIDs Candlelight Memorial Service in Arima. A friend of mine (O'Leo) who has an NGO (Red Initiative) and was instrumental in the organisation of the event asked me to do a candlelight display for one of the tents. Let's just say that the entire design concept fell victim to the wind! The tent (in fact the whole event) was in the middle of a large, very windy field. None of the candles, (which I had in the shape of the HIV/AID's ribbon on the floor of the tent) could be lit ... and those that were lit lasted only a short while, struggling in the strong blasts of wind. I tend to look at things symbolically, so I simply saw what could have been a potential 'design disaster' as a powerful message. I said to my friend's mother (who was also trying to light the candles): "What the candles are going through is symbolic of the struggle" ... people with HIV/AIDs who struggle not only to live, but to be understood and accepted ... and the struggle of those who are trying to help, but whose efforts may seem to be in vain as the virus sweeps even faster, further and deeper into societies around the globe. Candles in the wind.

But (as I said to my friend's mother), the thing is to not give up, despite the strong winds. At the end of the show when I was going to my car with the box of unlit tea light candles (I had bought 200 up at Mount St. Benedict), I offered some to the people in the car next to mine. Interestingly, they were the sister and friends of Godfrey Sealey, an important Trinidadian playwright/actor/activist who recently (on April 26th, 2006) succumbed to the virus after years of living/battling with it. He was a strong and creative soul, with the courage to openly discuss his status (despite stigma and discrimination) at a time when no-one else did. As I gave most of the candles to the small group of his friends/family, I realised that the candles were being placed in the right hands. In a way these people who had loved him were the living representatives of a man who had for so long been a powerful voice for those with HIV/AIDs. Their lighting the candles in the sanctuary of their own homes was perhaps just what was 'meant to be'. I have the remaining candles and they will also be lit. I think I will share them out at tonight's Greenlight meeting. Or perhaps we will have our meeting by candlelight.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
A few of the wire flowers I had also made for the display (on stage in this photo). They are similar to the moon flowers growing in Diva's top pane

In closing ... I had also made a large bunch of wire flowers as part of the display. When it was all over and people were packing up their tents (refreshments, pamphlets, etc.), I noticed the wire flowers lying in the dust. I picked them up, gathered them into a bunch and tied them with one of the large red ribbons I had put to stream from the top of the tent. I went across to some of the men packing up the sound equipment and said "Would any of you like these flowers to give to one of your girlfriends?" One of them looked at the bunch (with what I found was a bit of suspicion) and said "Nahhhhhh." The other one reached out and quitely said "I'll take it. Thank you."

I think everything ended up in the right hands.

Shifting to emerge

Something about this blog (something about me) is shifting,
but I'm not sure what it is or what it (what I) will become.
I think of how it was (how I was)
Then as this year turned, it (I) also turned.
Now I feel it (myself) shifting yet again.
The feeling is like something squirming within an egg
or surging upwards from a volcano.
What is emerging?

What's missing from Diva ... if anything?

It seems that something is missing from Diva but I'm not quite sure what. Could it be that something around the edges/the frame is needed? Some other colour? Is the third pane from the top (web of intention) too clear? Is the missing top pane (Moon flowers) too empty? Or is Diva happy just as she is without any extra adornment?
My other lamps are more elaborate and colourful. Diva, on the other hand, has taken MUCH longer to make than any other lamp I've ever made ... yet she is by far the most simple and basic in appearance. Whilst the other lamps also have deep symbolism to them, Diva's whole symbolic process felt fathoms deeper, going beyond even what I recorded on this blog. The time that she took was the time that I needed to go through whatever I had to go through in order to get her to where she is now. It could not have happened sooner and it could not have happened differently. Perhaps her adornment is in her symbolism and her process. Diva ... the humble, unassuming one who enters a room full of well-dressed, well-rehearsed, well-connected, wealthy people and works miracles.

The simple web of intention. The piece of paper I put there for manifestation says:
Clarity of thoughts, feelings, intentions and actions.

*
Therefore, be ye lamps unto yourselves, be a refuge to yourselves. Hold fast to Truth as a lamp; hold fast to the Truth as a refuge. Look not for a refuge in anyone beside yourselves. And those, who shall be a lamp unto themselves, shall betake themselves to no external refuge, but holding fast to the Truth as their lamp, and holding fast to the Truth as their refuge, they shall reach the topmost height (Buddha)

Exhibition

Some of my photography will be featured in the upcoming exhibition The Caribbean in the Age of Modernity. Read about it here and scroll down to see some of the photographs. Names of photographers and titles of the pieces are below each image. We were asked to comment visually on the theme (Caribbean in modernity).
Here is a snippet of how I described my perspective for the catalogue:
My images show older ways of life, values and nature being swallowed into oblivion as the modern appetite for faster, bigger and “better” runs rampant through our society. When I drive around Trinidad these days, everywhere I look, I see a construction site with cranes. I therefore used the crane as a recurring symbol in each photo, emphasizing its prevalence and seeming importance ... (continued)
Check out the exhibition 'in the flesh' later this month if you can.

Just 3 of the many amazing things

1. How everything always unfolds exactly as it is destined to

Diva's Designs

On Saturday I left my car in Grand Bazaar carpark and rode with Ranger in his car to the mangrove where we were beginning our Greenlight R.E.B.I.R.T.H. clean up. On the way back to G. Bazaar, there was (as usual) someone standing at the entrance handing out flyers advertising a sale at one of the stores. He handed it to Ranger who glanced at it and handed it to me saying "This looks like a woman thing." No need to say what struck me immediately about the flyer.
Technically speaking, Diva is finished. Although when mummy saw her she said "Something is missing." I myself feel that something is definitely missing from Diva ... but I don't know what it is yet.
I have put a green bulb on her (soothing, healing, pacifying, giving life) and have tried it out on myself a few times. The first night I tried it out, I had been in a horrible mood all day ... and as I pushed in the plug and Diva's gentle green light came shining through, I felt a wave of calm wash through me, dissipating my disharmony. The green bulb is not very bright, as the coloured bulbs are only 25 watts ... but it is enough to cast a gentle and soothing glow.

Do not underestimate the powerful messages in leaves that blow across your path.

I had asked Nature's map for directions. Yesterday afternoon I was going out and, as I opened the door to my car, the wind blew a leaf from the poui tree onto the driver's seat, exactly where I was going to sit. I felt that this was Nature's answer (or one of them). I put the leaf on the passenger seat and went about my way.

I forgot about my windblown companion until later in the afternoon when something told me to go to the car and look at the leaf. When I did, there was a particular formation in its veins that stood out. The formation instantly reminded me of a rune symbol, but I couldn't remember what it meant - so I looked it up. (If you don't know what runes are, you can read about them here): "The word 'rune' actually means mystery, secret or whisper."

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This rune is the symbol Algiz. Held the right way up (which it was), it stands for "Protection, a shield. The protective urge to shelter oneself or others. Defense, warding off of evil, shield, guardian. Connection with the gods, awakening, higher life. It can be used to channel energies appropriately. Follow your instincts. Keep hold of success or maintain a position won or earned. "

The fate of the other 3 poems

Amongst the various interactive goodies contained in Tracy J's prized Diva Kit were three sealed envelopes. Written on each envelope was the name Diva and a red ink stamp saying URGENT. Each envelope contained one of the three other poems submitted for the Write a Poem to Diva experience: one by M. Church, one by theglasshermitage and one by Anonymous.

With these envelopes were instructions for Tracy J to give an envelope to three different people (either strangers or people know to him). He was asked to not explain what was going on, but to record each person's response upon reading their poem ... and write a report which he would send to me based on the experience. I asked him to do this because I felt that the people receiving these poems would inevitably be receiving messages for themselves. After all, such is the cosmic power of our friend Diva.

Nearing completion

I was going to incorporate the poems on the actual window lamp structure, but yesterday I decided to have them as separate entities which are, nevertheless, still related to Diva.

Tracy J's poem is etched into glass, in honour of Diva's panes. In the above photo the glass with the poem engraved on it is held up against the yellow poui on the hill in the garden.

Guanaguanare's poem is painted onto wood (a wooden art board) in honour of Diva's wooden frame.

These two poetic elements will be presented along with Diva when she is finally given to her new owner(s). They can choose to keep the poems for themselves or give each one as a gift to selected individuals. This will be similar to what happened to the other poems. We will hear more about their fate within the next few days.

Meanwhile, Diva continues toward the point of completion. I painted the back of her frame in white yesterday. Now all I have to do is put on her electrical cord and bulb ... and she will be ready for the world!

Not very productive

My plans to work on Diva yesterday and possibly even finish her were thwarted by an unexpected bout of laziness and apathy. I felt like doing absolutely nothing and did not feel in the least bit motivated. I did go and buy the electrical fittings and two bulbs (a green one and a white one), but that was about it.

I think I will ask Diva for guidance.

Poems & Light

Today I will make a concerted effort to complete Diva by applying the two poems from the Poets of the Light, purchasing and putting together her electrical wiring and bulbs and possibly painting her back in white.

I think Diva should have different coloured bulbs for different moods, especially as the flowery pane with the bejewelled cosmic web over it is clear glass. The colours will emanate through the embossed glass flowers, contributing to the desired setting.

Blue for a calming and cooling effect - perhaps after studying or a hard day at work. Blue can also work for stimulating the third eye and promoting clear thoughts and dreams. Red for eating (red is supposed to stimulate the appetite) and other activities that require stimulation. Green for soothing, healing, pacifying, giving life - perhaps when feeling tired, run down, under the weather and in need of support.

Go Diva, Go Diva!

Prizegiving

Yesterday evening Tracy J, one of the Poets of the Lamp, received his Diva Kit in an intimate, spontaneous, picnic-type ceremony up on Mount St. Benedict. The event was attended by a small gathering: Tracy J, his mother (Buddha), myself ... and of course the spirit of Diva.

Tracy J with his Diva Kit
Tracy J was literally on top of the world (the Mount is a few thousand feet above ground and overlooks a large expanse of the south, west and east of Trinidad) as the precious package was placed into his hands. Given the kind of spunky and spontaneous person that he is, he will no doubt be making good use of the contents of his kit. Later on we will be hearing about his Diva Kit 'adventures' on this blog.

In other Diva news, I put a message on Diva's web-line last night so that it would manifest. The lamp light is really supposed to be behind it, to quicken the manifestation ... so I have to get moving on setting up Diva's electrical supply soon. Just a few more steps and Dear Diva will be complete. And speaking of Dear Diva, don't forget that she is ready and willing to answer your questions.
